The word mandala is of Sanskrit origin. It describes a symbolic representation of the Universe in the Buddhist and Hindu traditions.

The Swiss psychoanalyst Carl Jung spoke of mandalas representing ‘the Self, the wholeness of the personality’. He experienced an urge to draw mandalas during periods of intense personal growth, and thought that they signalled a rebalancing within the psyche to produce a more complex, stable and better integrated personality.
